All sites listed are within a 60-minute drive
The time of the Etruscans and the Faliscans.
The art of Tuscia from this period can be seen in their cities, and their works in Tarquinia , in its extraordinary necropolis (a world heritage site, UNESCO)
and in its beautiful archaeological museum .
The necropolises of Tuscania and San Giuliano are noteworthy in splendid natural settings.
Ferento is a site that was first Etruscan, then Roman, with its theatre still in use today, in a continuity typical of these ancient places.
Not to be missed is Sutri , with its Roman amphitheatre and archaeological park .
You can join rich tours related to the most ancient period of the Viterbo Tuscia
The time of the Middle Ages
The Middle Ages have perhaps left the richest and most beautiful traces. All of Viterbo is medieval, considered the best preserved medieval city in Italy. The Palace of the Popes with its beauty and history is the most representative, but the entire old part of the city is the Middle Ages present today, in particular the district of San Pellegrino , the largest medieval district in Europe. It is worth mentioning the small Romanesque church of San Silvestro , where a murder took place, mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
Finally, the fountains of Viterbo with their stories and legends
In Montefiascone you can find the Rocca de Papi , with an exceptional view of Lake Bolsena, and the church of San Flaviano .
Worth seeing are the castles and fortresses , evidence of the importance of the area, where the Middle Ages were often superimposed on the Renaissance.
Worth seeing are the castles of the small village of Vignanello , still inhabited but open to visitors, with a splendid garden, the castles of Soriano , Carbognano , Civita Castellana , Tuscania , Vulci , Bolsena , Vasanello , the Tower of Chia , the Rocca dei Borgia
The village of Vallerano offers a historic center, almost entirely pedestrian and uncontaminated. Leaving the village and walking through woods and hazelnut groves, along a not very easy path you reach the hermitage of San Salvatore , a thousand years old, restored and guiltily abandoned. The frescoes are still visible (for how long?). A difficult but suggestive visit.
Still in Vallerano is the small Romanesque church of Maria Santissima della Pieve .
In Vasanello the small Romanesque church of S. Maria Assunta is recommended
In the village of Civita Castellana, the cathedral and its floors are not to be missed
The time of the Renaissance
The testimonies are fewer, but very particular.
Villa Lante in Bagnaia , with its spectacular gardens, Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola , the sanctuary of Ruscello in Vallerano , San Martino al Cimino and its Doria Pamphili palace , the Cathedral of S. Margherita in Montefiascone, the park of the monsters in Bomarzo . The Renaissance garden of the Ruspoli Castle in Vignanello . Signs of an unusual wealth and affection for the territory.
